Legends Live!

Legends Live!

Visitors to iconic castles across Wales will step back in time this summer as Legends Live! — a programme of highly-immersive interpretation events — returns for a second season.

Announced by Cadw today (12 July), Legends Live! 2018 will pop up at five historic sites, including the castles of Conwy, Kidwelly, Raglan, Chepstow and Harlech during July, August and September.

The programme will bring the characters, stories and magic of Welsh history to life, in portrayals by Past Pleasures — the experts behind interpretation at world-class sites such as the Tower of London and Warwick Castle.

The interactive events will allow visitors to experience Welsh history first-hand, with the opportunity to meet real historic characters and experience everything from a dramatic medieval battle to an elegant Tudor soiree and a wedding celebration from the Middle Ages.

Minister for Culture and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said: “Legends Live! is a travelling programme of interpretation events, designed to engage visitors in the real stories behind Wales’ historic sites.

“The programme presents historic interpretation in a refreshing light — offering fully-immersive experiences, designed by Cadw’s team of historians and the experts at Past Pleasures.

“The project is all part of Cadw’s Castles Alive! summer campaign, which aims to further improve the visitor experience and bring history to life at Wales’s fascinating historic sites — and the Legends Live! programme will do just that.”

The Legends Live! series of events will begin with a bloody quest to capture Conwy Castle on Saturday, 21 July and Sunday, 22 July, where visitors will be invited to join forces with the Welsh Tudur brothers in a scheme to trick the King’s guardsmen.

Legends Live! will come to Kidwelly Castle a week later, allowing visitors to watch as Gwenllian, Wales’ warrior princess, leads her army into a bloody battle against the ferocious forces of Norman Lord, Maurice de Londres, on 28 and 29 July.

Tales of the Mabinogion will shake the stones of Harlech Castle on 04 and 05 August, as Legends Live! presents the story of Branwen ferch Llŷr.

Meanwhile, Chepstow Castle visitors are cordially invited to step back into medieval Wales on 25 and 26 August as Lord William Marshal celebrates his marriage to the lovely Lady Isabel de Clare. The 12th century event will include courtly dances and medieval tournaments galore.

And finally, on Saturday, 01 September and Sunday, 02 September, Lord William and Lady Anne Herbert will welcome visitors to a soiree at Raglan Castle — their grandiose home. The event will offer an array of Tudor activities including traditional garden games.
