The award was given by Irish bus tour operator, CIE Tours International, who recognised the quality of the UK’s hotels and visitor attractions by awarding Harlech Castle and 31 other tourism providers, a merit award in its UK Awards of Excellence.

Merit awards are made to suppliers achieving an overall customer satisfaction rating of 90% or over, based on customer feedback.

The CIE Awards are based on the views of 11,000 visitors to the UK in 2013 across 259 tourism partners in the UK, 79 of which are hotels and 180 are visitor attractions.

On receiving the award, Anthony Hayes, Head Custodian at Harlech Castle, said: “This is a great recognition not only of the fantastic work of the staff in the castle but also of the unique and fantastic site that we work in. Harlech Castle is one of the many fascinating heritage attractions across Wales and I hope that many more visitors will visit and enjoy our site and many other Cadw sites over the coming months."

Ryan Evans, a custodian at Tintern Abbey, said: “We’re delighted, and the fact that it has been voted for by visitors makes it even more special. Excellent customer service is one of the priorities at all of Cadw’s sites, of which there are 129 across the whole of Wales. We are delighted that visitors to Tintern Abbey have enjoyed their experience, and we hope that the award will encourage more people to come and discover the history."
