As You Like It — a Shakespearean summer at Caernarfon and Conwy Castles

Friday 23 August 2013

Open-air theatre company The Lord Chamberlain’s Men will perform their all-male production of Shakespeare’s much loved comedy, As You Like It, at two of north Wales’s most spectacular castles on 29, 30 and 31 August.

The production is part of the theatre company’s tour across Wales, which includes visits to five historic sites that are cared for by Cadw. Performances will take place at Caernarfon Castle on Thursday 29 August and at Conwy Castle on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 August, with each show beginning at 7.30pm.

The play follows Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, who falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match. But Rosalind’s usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity, banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she seeks out her father and his friends in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love.

With warring brothers, clowns, comic peasants, romance, death threats, escape and even a wrestling match, there is something for everyone. Join the players on their journey across Wales and see Shakespeare’s plays performed in the way the Bard first envisioned them, with an all-male cast, traditional costume and Elizabethan song and dance.

Mark Puddle, the theatre company’s founder and creative director, said: ‘The play’s woodland setting blends beautifully with the outstanding grandeur of Cadw’s historic sites and castles. As You Like It combines adventure, comedy and romance, and the story will be even more spectacular set in the shadows of Conway and Caernarfon Castle.’

John Griffiths, Minister for Culture and Sport, said: ‘Wales’s built heritage provides dramatic sights, and outdoor performances like these help to bring the monuments to life for a wide range of audiences to enjoy.

‘Cadw has played host to a fantastic programme of events over the summer months that have attracted new visitors and encouraged local people to explore the monuments on their doorstep.’
