Caerphilly Castle will be a hive of activity this weekend as it welcomes the illuminata digital light and sound show and a series of authentic medieval banquets from this Friday, 9 December. A Medieval Christmas Fayre will also take place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December (10am-4pm) with an exclusive advance screening event of BBC Cymru Wales’s Merlin also to be shown in the castle’s Great Hall on Sunday.
Due to strong demand, tickets for the Saturday night banquets have already sold out, but a limited number of tickets remain available for the five-course themed extravaganza in Caerphilly Castle’s Great Hall on the Friday and Sunday nights. Priced at £30 per head, tickets can be booked directly at the castle or by telephoning 029 2088 3143.
The banquets take place following the last illuminata screening each evening. As darkness falls, the castle’s walls of the inner ward will be bathed in light, creating an amazing feast for the senses. Images and sounds depicting centuries of this iconic stronghold’s history will be projected digitally in glorious technicolour.There will be two free screenings each night at 5.30pm and 6.30pm.
illuminata 2011 is supported under the Welsh Government’s Heritage Tourism Project, which is backed with £8.5m from the European Regional Development Fund.The project aims to maximise the economic value of heritage through increasing the volume, length and value of visits to Wales, linking themes of Welsh heritage at national, regional and local levels.
