Although the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 makes important legislative changes, it cannot alone provide Wales with up-to-date and responsive systems for the positive management of change in the historic environment.

The Act has therefore been complemented by an integrated body of policy, advice and guidance that will help to keep the management of the Welsh historic environment in step with the modern conservation philosophy set out in our Conservation Principles. These publications will help local planning authorities, third sector groups, owners and developers to manage change in the historic environment.
Planning policy and advice
A revised chapter on the historic environment has appeared in the latest edition of Planning Policy Wales and a number of outdated Welsh Office Circulars have been replaced by the new Technical Advice Note 24: The Historic Environment .
