Cadw unveils ‘knight vision’ video ahead of bank holiday battles

Thursday 20 August 2015

Families across Wales will be able to experience thrilling battles this bank holiday weekend (29–31 August), as Beaumaris, Caerphilly and White castles host full programmes of action-packed medieval events.

To set the scene, Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, has unveiled a new video that lets viewers experience the intensity of close combat — from the perspective of a 13th-century Welsh warrior.

The new ‘knight vision’ video, which can be viewed on Cadw’s YouTube channel, was created by attaching high-definition action cameras to specialist re-enactors at a recent Harlech Castle event.

Viewers can watch the 'blow by blow’ encounter between two members of the Knights of Ardudwy — and, through the visor of one of the combatants, experience what it's like to defeat an opponent in a frenetic fight.

Scenes from the footage will be recreated in front of a live audience of visitors during the upcoming castle events, which include the hotly anticipated annual Beaumaris Medieval Festival (29–31 August).

Battle-ready knights will also visit Denbigh Castle during the long weekend, as it hosts a fun, hands-on living history event that’s suitable for all ages.

Speaking about Cadw's programme of family-friendly summer bank holiday events, Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism said: "More than two and a half million people visit heritage sites cared for by the Welsh Government every year and, with events planned across Wales, the summer bank holiday is the perfect time for the whole family to explore the ages and take a hands-on approach whilst learning about our country’s fascinating past."

The bank holiday battles form part of Cadw’s summer of imaginative activities, which has seen historic sites across Wales host inflatable fortresses, sandcastles and giant versions of classic boardgames in the name of its Pack Your Imagination campaign.
