He led the Welsh war of independence and proclaimed himself Prince of Wales and this September, the story of Wales’s greatest legend, Owain Glyndŵr, will unfold at three Welsh castles to celebrate Owain Glyndŵr Day (16 September).

All part of the Welsh Government’s historic environment service (Cadw)’s Live the Legends campaign, the castles of Rhuddlan, Harlech and Conwy will pay honour to the life and times of the renowned Welsh Prince from 10am – 4pm* on Saturday, 16 September.

The date marks 617 years since Glyndŵr raised his standard against the English and visitors to Rhuddlan, Harlech and Conwy can relive history through heart-stopping combat displays, interactive demonstrations and magical storytelling sessions at each site.

Other highlights include the chance to meet the medieval Prince at Conwy Castle, attend have-a-go archery lessons at Harlech Castle and even enjoy shield making workshops at Rhuddlan.

Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure in Wales, said: “2017 is Visit Wales's Year of Legends, so celebrating Owain Glyndŵr Day within the grounds of three Welsh castles feels very apt.

“The celebrations will offer locals and tourists the chance to discover more about the iconic Prince and understand the important role he plays in Welsh culture, all while exploring the fascinating historic environment of Wales.

“We’re always looking at new and exciting ways to bring Wales’s historic sites to life and what better way to do so than in celebration of Wales’s favourite medieval hero?”

Visitors are encouraged to share their legendary experiences on social media by using the hashtag #LivetheLegends.
