Decoration & Plaster Repairs to Fireplace Hood and Adjacent Wall Surfaces
Specialist conservators were commissioned by the Cadw in April 2011 to carry out a detailed condition survey of the highly ornate decorative finishes around the fireplace in Lady Bute’s bedroom at Castell Coch. The original 1891 decoration design by renowned architect William Burges had been progressively deteriorating in certain areas, mainly due to driving rainwater penetration through external masonry walls. Salts present within the existing wall rendering had reacted with water ingress, leeching out onto the surface decoration and causing damage. At present, all deterioration has been recorded with a programme of repair works being carried out over the coming months. Further project up-dates to follow.
