A family day out to go down in history — and all available within general site admission…

Join us at Caerphilly Castle on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 August to kick-start the Kids’ History Festival in epic style!

Taking place between 10am – 4pm each day, our ‘GRAND OPENING’ event will boast more than 12 different family-friendly activities, ‘cool’ experiences and exciting workshops for mini historians to enjoy across the first two days of August.

Plus, on arrival, you’ll receive a special Kids’ History Festival wristband (while stock lasts) — granting you with unlimited access to all workshops, talks and activities taking place within the mighty castle walls.

Here’s what our Kids’ History Festival ‘GRAND OPENING’ celebration has in store:

  • Train as a medieval knight and learn how to clash blades to save Caerphilly Castle from attack.

Sword School sessions will run every 30 minutes on the castle’s front lawn between 11am  4pm. The sessions are suitable for both adults and children.  
   
  • Step inside our Kids’ History Festival arts-and-crafts tent to create your very own medieval-inspired shield, sword or crown using recycled waste.
 
All activities will be available between 11am – 4pm inside the arts-and-crafts tent in the central courtyard.  
   
  • Decorate a giant cardboard castle or make your mark on our gigantic dragon wall mural!

  • Learn how to create a medieval-inspired castle or ferocious dragon at a special Lego building workshop.
 
Suitable for children aged 4+, there will be two Lego workshops taking place each day inside the Great Hall for a maximum of 25 children. Available on a first-come-first-serve basis, the first workshop will take place between 11am and 12.30pm, with the second taking place between 2pm and 3.30pm. Please arrive early to book a place and avoid disappointment.  
   
  • Delve into Welsh history with Cadw archaeologist, Erin Lloyd-Jones, to discover the stories behind the most inspirational women of Welsh history — from the inspiring story of Warrior Princess Gwenllian of Wales, to Branwen ferch Llyr’s tale of hope and heart-ache.

Erin Lloyd-Jones’ guest talk on Inspirational Women in Welsh History will take place on Thursday 1 August ONLY between 1pm and 1.45pm inside the Great Hall.   
   
  • Take part in a series of interactive story-telling sessions to discover the legends of Welsh history with multi-talented children’s author, Mike Church.
 
   
Suitable for children of all ages, drop-in interactive story-telling sessions with Mike Church will be available throughout each day inside the Great Hall.  
   
  • Join a medieval character sketching workshop with upcoming Welsh artist and illustrator, Efa Lois.
 
   

Suitable for children of all ages, Efa Lois will host two drop-in sketching workshops inside the Great Hall each day. The first drop-in session will take place between 11am and 12pm and the second will take place between 2pm and 4pm. Colouring sheets will be available for younger children.

 
   
  • Try your hand at more than 12 traditional medieval games at Fiery Jack the Jester’s Medieval Games Emporium.

Suitable for all ages, the Medieval Games Emporium will be open for family enjoyment between 10am and 4pm each day.  

 

Plus, face-painting, musical performances and meet-and-greet entertainment with Fiery Jack the Jester will be also be available for the duration event.
