Visit Caerphilly Castle

Public transport

The train station is a 10-minute walk/push downhill to the castle. The closest bus stop is directly outside the castle. The bus will also stop at the train station: Google maps view

Car parks

There is a small short-stay car park next to the tourist information centre across the road from the castle and there is a larger long stay car park at the back of the castle that is approx. a 10 min walk/push from the entrance. These car parks will charge a fee from September 2022.

The path to the entrance to the castle from the car park is flat, there are also steps situated near the bus stop to get to the entrance of the castle if visitors do not wish to walk the long way around the path.

The visitor centre is at the front of the castle and is approached by a flat and paved path. On exiting the visitor centre there is a short moderately steep incline and a wooden bridge to enter the main body of the castle.

Toilets are located in the centre of the castle, accessed by crossing over a bridge that has a moderately steep incline. There is an accessible cubical and baby changing facilities.

Dogs must be kept on leads at all times and non-assistance dogs must remain on the ground floor only.

The north dam platform, courtyard and great hall are all on the ground floor levels, whilst the lower level of the gatehouse has one step.

The rest of the site is accessed via narrow winding staircases, with the stairs around the site being largely original, and therefore narrow and uneven.

The path from the visitor centre to the courtyard is a mix of paved and resin surface, the path to the north dam platform is gravel and then grass.

The digital interpretation and information panels are mostly on the ground floor.
