The current building was erected in 1863-5, just after the railway came to Ruthin, as a direct replacement for the former town hall which stood on St Peter's Square. This building, which had been built from the old chancel of the church, was replaced with a new building on the newly built Market Street. Market Street was built to link St Peter’s Square to the railway station which stood where the Briec roundabout is now. The architects were Poundley and Walker, and it was built by the local borough council and was made up of a market hall and town hall. The carved sandstone detail panels on the outside were produced by Edward Griffith of Chester. The second floor of the town hall has a large hall which was used for performances and dances. Originally the section of the building nearest to St Peter’s was built as a fire station. Recently, a market has been re-established in the market hall and there are plans to open up and use the fine town hall building.

The Town Hall and Market Hall are next to each other in Market Street Ruthin, postcode is LL15 1BE and grid reference is SJ12655840
