St Saeran’s is a double-naved structure, but with a more august history, as it was the mother church for this area of the vale in the pre-conquest era. It had a community of clergy headed by an abbot, like a monastic community. Descendants were documented as late as 1402.

The church contains many artefacts, including an excellent large medieval wall painting of St Christopher and a hexagonal stone depicting a bishop holding a crozier.

Llanynys translates as Island Church, probably referring to the extensive flooding that occurred, which surrounded and cut off the church at times.

Location - Llanynys, Denbighshire, LL16 4PA.

The church is easiest to visit by car. Heading south on the A525 turn left as you approach the village of Pentre Llanhaedr. Continue for about 1 km and turn right at the t-junction. A further km takes you to the centre of the hamlet, avoiding a left turn as you approach Llanynys. This gives an opportunity to explore other churches in the vale at Llanychan, Llangynhafal, Llandyrnog and Llanrheadr on a mini tour.
