Castell Caernarfon
Published

Caernarfon will be a busy place for Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service over the next few months and years.

As part of their ambitious plans to enhance the visitor experience at Castell Caernarfon’s Kings Gate and Porth Mawr Gatehouse, preparatory and conservation works are set to begin on this World Heritage site.

A package of over £5m which includes a £1m of Visit Wales ERDF Tourism Attractor Destination funds will see the monument provide world class level access and other key visitor improvements that will further complement the exciting regeneration programme within town, helping to bring long term social and economic benefits.

The Kings Gate proposals will include:

  • first ever level access in any similar UK World Heritage site through a lightweight glazed lift to the upper embattlements
  • developing imaginative, interactive and immersive experiences
  • an unique snack and light refreshment space within the tower
  • significant conservation works to the gate
  • educational and event space
  • accessible toilet facilities
  • increased and improved retail space within the King’s Gate Tower area.

Porth Mawr will also see new lift and stair access to the Town Walls, two new luxury apartments and significant conservation works to this key walled town entrance.

Lord Elis-Thomas, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism added;

I’m thrilled that these important preparatory and conservation packages are taking place at Caernarfon – beginning the important journey to transforming and enhancing our world class offer. These two developments will truly break down barriers, making our sites more accessible, relevant and enjoyable. We must continue work on maximising access for those with mobility difficulties”.

The 19 week enabling package at the castle will see important archaeological investigation work carried out in preparation for the main package of works next year. The castle will be open as normal during the preparatory and conservation works with visitors encouraged to come along to see the work being carried out on this exciting project.

The works at Porth Mawr will build on the initial package that was completed several months ago to ensure appropriate and suitable conditions for critical conservation of the monument.
