Roman Caerleon — working in partnership takes shape
Six local volunteers have been appointed as Caerleon Community Advocates (CCAs) for Roman Caerleon – Working in Partnership.
Amgueddfa Cymru, Cadw and Newport City Council are pleased to be working together to maximise the potential of Caerleon’s Roman heritage for the benefit of the community and visitors and are delighted to welcome the new CCAs to the team.
The CCAs have a key role working closely with the partnership to ensure that the community’s voices continue to shape the plans for a reinvigorated Roman Caerleon that benefits everyone.
The Advocates will put community voices at the heart of the ‘partnership’ and is an increase of two above the four people that the ‘partnership’ originally intended to select, reflecting the range of skills and enthusiasm on offer.
Brett Childs, Harry Weeks and Huw Wilkinson were chosen as CCAs to the Governance Board, while Justine Desmond, Cheri Hughes, and Neil Pollard were picked as CCAs for the Steering Group. These roles last for one year with a two-three year extension subject to funding and review.
So far, the ‘partnership’ has been working on a plan to create an exciting future offer for Roman Caerleon and the CCAs will help ensure that local views feed into:
• finalising a new vision for Caerleon’s heritage and tourism offer
• exploring options to improve the experience across the Roman and other historic sites, and
• shaping and selecting the options that progress through to detailed design and hopefully delivery.
Community and stakeholder engagement opportunities will be taking place over the next 18 months for people to get involved and share ideas. The Advocates are also developing ideas for a programme of local events aimed at celebrating Caerleon’s history and heritage and raising awareness of this project.
After this first phase is over, the ‘partnership’ intends to seek funding for a more ambitious project to kickstart delivery of the new vision.
CCA Brett Childs said: “I'm excited to be part of Roman Caerleon - Working in Partnership to help firmly put Caerleon on the map. I'm eager to bring my own expertise and insights to the Governance Board and support my fellow Caerleon Community Advocates in putting community voices at the heart of Caerleon's tourism offer".
