Cadw Lifelong Learning teamed up with the Greenfield Valley volunteer coordinator to pilot a new project to enable a group of enthusiastic volunteers to develop an exciting new online resource for the next generation to use in education. We aimed to empower volunteers to develop and enhance new and old skills.

We also aimed to help create a productive environment to promote health and well-being for all and pass on generational skills and knowledge. Basingwerk Abbey was the perfect place and on the group's doorstep.

With support and partnership working with National Library of Wales, National Museums Wales and Flintshire Archives we supported volunteers to develop an educational resource pack for teachers/children to use in and around Basingwerk Abbey.

The resource pack can be used for self-led visits along with teacher notes. Its excellent use of  engaging facts and themes can also be linked to the new creative  curriculum. The volunteers created original art work to accompany the resource and at every stage on the project consulted with local schools.

This project, into which Cadw Lifelong Learning team put so much, has made a difference to the Holywell community, it went on to win the ‘British Museum Volunteer Marsh Award’ for the Welsh region. The Greenfield Valley coordinator, the volunteers and Cadw were represented at the awards ceremony on Monday 24 September 2018 in London.
