Introduction

We are the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. We provide advice on behalf of the Welsh Ministers to local planning authorities and others within the planning system about the likely impact of proposed development on the historic environment.

The historic environment is a resource that we need to cherish and protect for future generations. Protection, however, need not prevent change. Positive change can increase the long-term sustainability and economic viability of historic assets. It can also bring improvements to our understanding and appreciation of the historic environment as well as social and economic benefits through increased regeneration and tourism.

One of the ways in which change to the historic environment is managed is through the planning system.  When considering potential development, everyone involved in the planning process must take into account the Welsh Government’s objectives to protect, conserve, promote and enhance the historic environment as a resource for the well-being of present and future generations.
