There is a free council owned car park opposite the ironworks: Google maps view
Drivers carrying passengers visiting with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, can access a drop-off point on North Street (B4246) behind the visitor centre – please note – it is not currently possible to park in this drop-off point, all visitors need to park in the local authority car park and cross Estate Road to access the entrance.
Pedestrians leaving the car park have a short walk either down 10 steps to cross the road to the Ironworks gate, or to avoid steps can exit the car park gates & follow the footpath around to a lowered kerbside to cross the road. When crossing the road be mindful of two-way traffic.
The entrance to the site is via a small gateway and follows a narrow uneven pathway.
The visitor centre/shop at Blaenavon Ironworks is accessible via a wide automatic glass door and has a small gift shop area with one pay point.
Toilets: visitor toilets are to your right as you enter the site, with an accessible cubicle.
We currently do not have any baby changing facilities; however the accessible cubicle is generous in size and might be useful with the aid of parents’ own changing provisions.
Dogs must be kept on leads at all times and non-assistance dogs are not permitted inside the furnished cottages.
A level but uneven (rough) gravel surface covers the whole of the lower area of the Ironworks. There is also a small grassy area with several picnic benches.
On this lower-level visitors will find an iron model and the audio/visual interpretation in the Cast House building. There are also two audio posts at this level.
The furnished cottages can be accessed via a small incline, up a gravel pathway.
The cottages have standard width doors, but please note there is a wooden lip at the threshold.
The same is true of the truck shop and model room doors.
Visitors are also able to access the upper levels of the site (the balance tower and calcining ovens) via a steep incline. There are two audio posts situated at this level.
