What? A day to breathe in the fresh sea air of Oxwich, beginning at the castle and ending at the bay

Where? Gower, Swansea

Cadw site to see: Castell Oxwich

Most ‘Instagrammable’ spot: the remains of Castell Oxwich's gigantic stone dovecote. Unique to Oxwich, the dovecote offers a bold, checker-board style backdrop for budding Instagrammers.

This itinerary begins with a visit to Castell Oxwich — a stately Tudor relic that stands atop a hill on the Gower Peninsula. Dating back to the 16th century, the partly ruined site was once a fortified manor house occupied by the noble family of Sir Richard Mansel, the High Sheriff of Glamorgan and his servants.

After enjoying views of the former mansion home and surrounding woodland, follow the sound of the sea and make your way down to Oxwich Bay, one of the Gower Peninsula’s most charming beaches.

If the sun is shining, pay a visit to Oxwich Watersports at the Beach Hut on Oxwich Bay, for a chance to try a wide array of adventurous activities — from windsurfing to kayaking and wakeboarding to sailing.

Either pack a picnic for the trip or satisfy your appetite inside the Beach House Restaurant — a local eatery boasting a prime location with magnificent coastal views and delicious sea food.

If you fancy a change of scenery or an overnight stay, the award-winning King Arthur Hotel is a short drive away from the beach and promises a peaceful night’s sleep as well as a hearty meal.
