There are detailed records on historic assets in Wales to help owners, statutory bodies and others understand their significance and undertake their sustainable management.
Cof Cymru - National Historic Assets of Wales
Cof Cymru provides free, online access to Cadw’s records on scheduled monuments, listed buildings, registered landscapes of historic interest, protected wrecks and World Heritage Sites in Wales. The map-based resource allows users to locate sites, determine their extent and download descriptions. Historic parks and gardens will be displayed on the site during 2019 after the completion of a review of existing sites before the introduction of a statutory register under the provisions of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016.
Before searching Cof Cymru, please be sure that the site is functioning properly. If you zoom into the map and red polygons (scheduled monuments) and blue dots (listed buildings) appear, then Cof Cymru is ready to use. If they do not, please contact Cadw and we will undertake the search for you.
Historic Environment Records
The four regional Welsh archaeological trusts have compiled and maintained historic environment records since the 1970s. They now undertake this work on behalf of the Welsh Ministers under provisions of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016. The records provide a comprehensive index to archaeological and historical sites, finds and investigations of all periods throughout Wales.
List of Historic Place Names of Wales
The Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 placed a duty on the Welsh Ministers to compile and maintain a list of Wales’ historic place names. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is discharging that duty on their behalf.
The List of Historic Place Names of Wales is available online and through the Welsh historic environment records.
Historic Wales is a map-enabled portal for historic environment information in Wales. It allows simultaneous searching of hundreds of thousands of records relating to archaeological monuments, historic buildings and artefacts held by: Cadw, the four Welsh archaeological trusts, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, and Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales.
Coflein is the online database for the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW). Curated by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the NMRW is the national collection of information about the historic environment of Wales from the earliest times to the present. Coflein provides access to details of many thousands of archaeological sites, monuments, buildings and maritime sites in Wales, as well as an index to the drawings, manuscripts and photographs held in the NMRW collections.
