Open Doors - Aberconwy House
Aberconwy House is the only medieval merchant's house in Conwy to have survived the turbulent history of the walled town over nearly six centuries. It is the oldest, secular domestic building in Wales. With timbers dating back to 1417, it was initially a Medieval traders house (or warehouse). Since then it has had a long history of trade, with Evan David selling produce from his Benarth farm here in the 1600s and Captain Samuel Williams selling goods such as slate, copper and lead in the 1800s. By the turn of the 20th Century it was a Temperance Hotel run by Jane and William Jones who offered a safe and quiet alternative to the rowdier pubs and inns of Conwy at the time. After running as an antique shop for a number of years it eventually fell into a state of disrepair. To save it from being dismantled and shipped to the USA it was bought by Alexander Campbell Blair from Llandudno who bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1934. Currently there's a National Trust second-hand bookshop on the ground floor, while the upstairs is used as a community space and open to the public when not booked out.
On Saturday 20th September local illustrator and author Rowynn Ellis will be here with original artwork from their 'Welsh Monsters and Mythical Creatures' book. They will be doing live drawing 114 (with a short lunch break) and inspired visitors are welcome to sketch their own mythical creatures. Visitors are welcome to explore all three floors of the building and relax under the medieval oak beams in the Public Living Room.
On Sunday 21st September, we are opening the building on a day it is normally closed and visitors are welcome to explore all three floors. Come and admire the architecture, talk to members of the team about the history of the building and what our plans are for the future, get creative sketching the oldest house in Wales, and relax and reflect under the medieval oak beams in the Public Living Room.
Aberconwy House is on the corner of Castle Street and High Street, LL32 8AY.
Aberconwy house is a short walk from bus stops and Conwy train station. Please be aware all areas of the building are accessed by stairs. This includes 4 steps down into the second-hand bookshop and then steps up to the middle and top floors.
