Gwent Archives is an Accredited Local Authority Archive Service, collecting, preserving and making accessible archives relating to the former county of Gwent. The archive is based in the historic General Offices building, built in 1913 as an administrative building for the Ebbw Vale Steelworks.

Visit Gwent Archives on the 26 September for the Open Doors Day event.
This is your chance to see all things behind-the-scenes and hear about the collections.

This Open Doors Day event is part of a broader celebration of Welsh archives and records via the
Archives Wales Alive / Archifau Cymru Byw project taking place in September 2026. Archives are for everyone, so please come and join in if you are interested in history, heritage, culture and creativity.

Booking required. Four tours throughout the day (10:15, 11:15, 13:00, 14:00), and each tour has ten spaces. Please call or email the following to book -

For electric cars there are 6 Type 2 (7.5kw) electric charging points available across the two car parks, operated via the Connected Kerb smartphone app. A free multistory car park is slightly further away (200m), next to the Coleg Gwent Campus on Lime Avenue.

Gwent Archives is on the ground floor of the General Offices, all on one level and fully accessible to wheelchair users, mobility scooters and pushchairs. Accessible access is provided at the rear entrance and there are accessible toilets on the ground floor. The two car parks closest to the General Offices include spaces for disabled badge holders plus a few spaces off Lime Avenue.

A hearing loop is in place in the Research Room, and hearing aids should be switched to the ‘T’ position. All staff at Gwent Archives are happy to advise on their services, facilities and collections and further information about additional support and their commitment to accessibility can be found in the Inclusion and Accessibility Policy.
