Ruthin Library is housed in a building associated with crime and punishment. It was built in 1785 to house the records of the Court of Great Assize and it was also used as a county hall or courthouse. As the building grew in prestige. a portico, complete with Doric columns, was added to the front in the 1860s. The last court sat here in 1974 but it continued as a magistrates' court until 1986. It was converted into a library in the early 1990s in an award-winning project.
