This fine church dates from c 1490 and was commissioned by Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry V11 in thanks for his victory at the Battle of Bosworth 1485 which brought him and the Tudor Dynasty to the throne of England. The land belonged to her fourth husband, Lord Thomas Stanley, who was the Lord of Mold and the King of Man. the Church is built in the Perpendicular Style with an aisled nave with carved stonework and an oak roof. the Tower was added in the 18th century and the church was restored by George Gilbert Scott in 1856 who also added an apsidal chancel. The beautiful stained glass . Windows mainly date from the 19th century but some Pre-Reformation stained glass was saved and later pieced together to form a new window.

The Open Doors event will consist of two guided tours of the church at 11am and 2pm on Saturday, 6th September 2025. For both sessions, I will be giving a brief talk on the background to the building during which attendees can sit. This will then be followed by a walking tour of the church during which I will point out features of significance and interest. Again attendees can sit if they wish in the pews as we proceed.

Those wishing to attend either of the two tours are asked to arrive 15 minutes beforehand.

St Mary’s Church is in the town Centre, situated at the top of Mold High Street and cannot be missed. The Post Code is CH7 1BQ.

The town has a bus station which is a transport hub with good connections to Chester, Wrexham. Flint and Deeside. If arriving by bus the church can be clearly seen from the bus station. There a limited free car parking behind the church and pay and display car parking at the nearby Griffiths’s Square Car park. there are steps up to the church building itself but there is also disabled access via the church car park and through the rear vestry door.
