Newport City Council, Cadw and Amgueddfa Cymru have agreed to work together to maximise the potential of Caerleon’s Roman heritage.

This part of the city is already known for its rich culture and historic assets.

These include the National Roman Legion Museum run by Amgueddfa Cymru as well as the Roman Fortress Baths and Roman amphitheatre cared for by Cadw. Caerleon is also a popular destination for school trips.

Together, the three organisations are developing a vision for this part of the city and exploring options to deliver an improved experience across all the Roman sites in Caerleon for the community and visitors.

A call for expressions of interest from people living or working in Caerleon to join Caerllion Rufeinig | Roman Caerleon – Working in Partnership and help represent local views will be made soon.

Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of Newport City Council, said: “We have a common purpose – to protect and promote our fantastic Roman legacy so I’m delighted that we are working together.

“We are also all committed to ensuring that the opportunities offered by Caerleon are beneficial to the local community and businesses as well as visitors. We recognise that residents and other stakeholders need to be a part of this process as we seek to help more people discover the area’s treasured history.”

Jane Richardson, chief executive of Amgueddfa Cymru said:

“At Amgueddfa Cymru, we want to provide high-quality visitor and learning experiences, and to make stronger connections between our collection and communities.

“The National Roman Legion Museum’s education and learning programmes are a key part of our work. We’re delighted to be working with Cadw and Newport City Council to establish Roman Caerleon and to grow / improve how we tell the story of Wales to a wider audience.”

Gwilym Hughes, deputy director Cadw, said:

“Caerleon’s internationally important Roman heritage and other historic assets deserve to be better known and appreciated. We look forward to joining with our partners, the community and other stakeholders to improve our heritage and tourism offer for the town and visitors’ benefit.”
