Little is known about Castell Oxwich before the Mansel family created their fortified manor house and obliterated any remains of a late medieval castle.

But it was held in the early 14th century by Robert de Peres, who was heavily implicated in the disappearance of royal treasure belonging to Edward II after his abdication in 1327.

Despite 10 years of inquiry, nothing was ever proven. But in 1968 conservation work at Oxwich uncovered an exquisite gold ring-brooch set with rubies and tiny cameos.
