Open Doors - North East Wales Archives at Ruthin Gaol.

North East Wales Archives is housed in Ruthin Gaol, a Grade II listed Pentonville style Victorian prison. Here, the prison cells are now used for a very different purpose- to store the county archive collection. You can use the archives to discover the history of your family, house, local area and much more. Records date back to the 12th century and up to the present day.

At the Open Doors event, you can go behind the scenes to where the historic archives of the County of Denbighshire are housed in environmentally-controlled, secure storage. Find out more about where the archives are currently kept and where they will be moving to as part of the Creative Archives project. 10.30am-11.30am- Tour and talk- Take a sneaky peek behind the scenes of the archives! Directions - Our Ruthin branch is in Ruthin Gaol, a Victorian Pentonville style prison located in Ruthin town. Our address is The Old Gaol, 46 Clwyd Street, Ruthin, LL15 1HP. There is parking onsite for up to two blue badge holders and plenty of public parking in nearby pay and display car parks (Park Road and Cae Ddol) By train: The nearest train stations are in Rhyl and Wrexham. You will need to use the bus service to get from Wrexham or Rhyl station to Ruthin. Journeys from Wrexham by bus will take around 50 minutes and over 1 hour from Rhyl. By bus: The nearest bus stop is on Market Street, Ruthin. When you arrive at Market Street head to St Peter’s Square and down the hill on Upper Clwyd Street. The Old Gaol is on the right at the bottom of Clwyd Street. Turn into the first gate and the archive service door is straight ahead. The walk from Market Street to the Old Gaol will take around 5-10 minutes.
