The Risca Workman's Institute was built in 1916 (in the middle of WW1), outside the boundary of the South Wales coalfield and in addition to an existing Institute built in 1911. It was requisitioned in WW2 for the administration of rationing and later, for many years, housed the local employment office. The empty building was purchased by Islwyn Borough Council in 1985 using European Heritage funds, installing the Risca Museum on the ground floor.

The Risca Museum will have many local and industrial artefacts on display. Experienced printers will be demonstrating the 1832 Columbian press. Local experts will be available to answer questions. On the first floor, the model railway club will be operating their several railway layouts.
