St Dyfnog (about 570 A.D.) lived at this site, and performed penance by standing in the cold well waters in his hair shirt. This led to the waters being attributed with healing powers to cure diseases such as deafness, dumbness, scabs and smallpox. It fell into decline after the reformation but revived temporarily in the Georgian period before falling into disuse again.

A restoration project was begun in 2012 when concerned locals formed a preservation society. Following National Lottery funding, the well basin, bridges and walls have been conserved and a path is being completed to allow access to the site.
