Open Doors - St Elidan's Church, Llanelidan

A church with a history that stretches back to the early Middle Ages in the tranquil setting of its own valley. The current building dates from the 13th century with additions through the subsequent centuries that included a Vale of Clwyd style twin aisles, a 14th century font, a Vestry designed by John Douglas and a porch and neighbouring Leyland Arms refurbished by Clough Williams Ellis in the 20th century. The circular Llan includes several unusual monuments and the grave of 'Coch Bach' y Bala. There are also unusual wood carvings that date from the 13th and 14th centuries that once decorated the lost Rood Screen.

Associated with the Open Doors weekend is a Craft Fair featuring the work of local craftspeople which will held in the church and churchyard on Saturday 19th of September, starting at 11.00am and continue until 3.00pm. Refreshments including cake will be available. The signed copies of the popular local history book 'St Elidan's Church and the Village of Llanelidan' by Andrew Sumner, will also be on sale.

By bus The T8 service Corwen to Chester via Ruthin and Mold. Hourly services along the A494 every hour in both directions with 'set down' only at the turning to Llanelidan. Buses will only pick up at the Llanelidan Bryn Grug stop on the A494, which is approximately a 1 mile walk to and from the church, or at Pandy'r Capel which is 1.5 miles south of the village on the A494. By car Access to the church is along narrow country lanes with passing places. From Ruthin: take the A494 south towards Corwen for 4.9 miles (709km) and take the turning left, signposted Llanelidan, and then immediately right. Continue for 3/4 of a mile (1.3km) and at the crossroads turn left. The Church is another 300 yards and is readily visible ahead. From Wrexham: take the A525 towards Ruthin. Turn left onto the B5429 at the Llysfasi College crossroads and continue on this B road for 3 miles. The church is visible from the road.

Disabled access is possible with a portable ramp available. The Leyland Arms, adjacent to the church will be open. There may also be a cricket match on the adjacent cricket pitch
