Lower Machen Church is a true hidden gem, located within easy travelling distance from Cardiff and Newport. Described by Cadw as remarkable, this church may be considered one of the top 10% of the most important buildings in England and Wales. Dating from 1102, it is one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in the old county of Monmouthshire. The 18th century grade II* Morgan Chapel is the burial place for the wealthy Morgan family of Machen, Ruperra and later Tredegar. Alongside the magnificent monuments in the chapel, there is also the largest collection of hatchment in any church in Wales. In recent years the church has undergone significant works to the roof, Morgan Chapel and the 15th century bell tower, so that this unique and beautiful building is conserved for future generations.
