Iconic ruin offers an unforgettably romantic experience

Welcome to officially the most romantic ruin in Wales – as voted by readers of Countryfile magazine.

Perched on a great limestone crag nearly 300ft/90m above the River Cennen, the dramatic silhouette of Carreg Cennen dominates the skyline for miles around and commands stunning views over the Carmarthenshire countryside.

From the moment you first glimpse the castle, probably built by Edward I’s loyal baron John Giffard at the end of the 13th century, you feel an incredible sense of drama and remoteness.

In this wild setting, with few reminders of the modern world, the castle will seem like your own personal discovery. So feel free to enter the elaborate barbican overlooked by twin towers. Explore the natural cave and vaulted passage cut into the cliff-face. We guarantee an unforgettable experience.

Health & Safety

The castle is located at the top of a steep hill, which is sometimes occupied by small livestock.

Please be mindful when visiting in poor weather conditions as the ground can be slippery underfoot. There are steep drops on the verges of the castle.

There are several steps and a steep path down to the cave. The cave is very dark, and torches should be provided at the main entrance by the castle owner. Please take care and watch your step, as the ground here is often wet and slippery. The tunnel within the cave can be narrow in parts, with low overhead natural stone. Please give plenty of room to visitors before you and be prepared to give way as they may return back to the cave entrance.

Be mindful that not all steps have handrails, and the steps are natural historic stone, which may be uneven. Please use handrails where available.

Guardrails have been installed to prevent access to any areas of the site that we have deemed as dangerous or to prevent falls in specific areas.

Climbing may result in serious injury. Please do not climb over or through any fixed installation.

As with all ancient monuments there is always a risk of stones being dislodged in bad weather, however, we manage this through extensive monitoring.

There are several wild plants and flowers, although these are great pollinators, they may be poisonous to visitors and animals, we strongly advise you not to touch or allow dogs to eat any vegetation.

Please watch our health & safety film before visiting Cadw sites.

Please report any anti-social behaviour such as climbing, setting fires, graffiti etc. to CadwAccidentsReports@gov.wales

Some or all of the following warning signs may be found situated around the sites. Please pay attention where appropriate.
