Derwen Cross

Preaching cross with striking Christian carvings that has stood the test of time

Standing 6.5ft/2m high (or 14ft/4.3m if you count its stone pedestal) this ornate medieval preaching cross is amongst the best preserved in this part of Wales. Though weathered over the centuries, many of its intricate carvings are still visible. The octagonal shaft is decorated with foliage and faces, while the four sides of a box-shaped head feature carved depictions of Biblical scenes including a Virgin and Child, the crucifixion and a Virgin and St John.

The church, with its rood screen and loft dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, is also worth a visit.
