Hen Gwrt Medieval Moated Site
A well-preserved moat protecting a vanished manor
Some things look better from a vantage point up, up and away than from the ground. Hen Gwrt is surely one. If you could view it from above, you’d see with definitive clarity the neat, square outline of what was probably a medieval manorial site. The manor has long gone, but its square-sided moat remains, surprising well preserved.
Hen Gwrt (‘The Old Court’) probably belonged to the bishops of Llandaff in the 13th and 14th centuries, and was later used as a hunting lodge.
