Porth-yr-Aur is the Western Gate to the town of Caernarfon, and was constructed in or about 1285 as a twin-towered gatehouse with a small projecting barbican. It was the only entrance in medieval times for commerce into the town from the quay side.

In the late 18th century it housed a battery of seven cannons against possible invasion from Napoleon’s forces, and today retains at least one starter cannon for sailing regattas.

The building is probably the oldest premises owned by any yacht club in the world.

Come and visit the 13th century towers of Porth-yr-Aur - the magnificent West Gate of Caernarfon and home of the oldest yacht club in Wales.

Starting at 10am -

• free guided tours around the historic building.

• tea, coffee and cakes for sale, with proceeds going to the RNLI and Sail 4 Cancer charities.
