Young Custodians Wales - Get Involved
The shape of your Young Custodians group and activity it takes will be down to you, your needs and your aspirations. Whether you base around a core group, lunchtime club, a year group or whole school / section approach, is up to you.
See our project ideas page to start you off. It’s in no way exhaustive and will grow as Young Custodians groups share their activities. But they are tried and tested.
Feel free to contact us through Cadw.education@gov.wales at any point, to start a discussion about Young Custodians.
Please note there is no specific funding associated with the Young Custodian scheme. But Cadw Education may assist or call-in others to add value where practicable and possible to support your activity.
Choose Your Site
Start by choosing your site. Research your local monuments as a school/group project: Find your nearest/most interesting historical monument – the choice is yours, it could be a castle, or it could be a stone circle!
Young Custodian Wales is designed for and aimed at engagement / building relationships with our Cadw sites. Ideally with a staffed site, if you have one nearby – as our custodians will be on hand to link with. Alternatively, you may opt for one of our unstaffed sites. This will need a different approach, but the Cadw Education team will be able to guide you.
Follow these links to find protected monuments nearby! Make a list of all the historic monuments you have found and have a class discussion about each type of monument: Which is the closest, largest, oldest?
- Find a place to visit
- Cof Cymru - National Historic Assets of Wales, an online service that displays depictions and associated record descriptions of Designated Historic Assets in Wales. Not all historical assets are on our map, only the ones with Scheduled Ancient Monument status Scheduled Monuments.
- Archwilio - a Wales-wide database of archaeological and historical information. here are lots of rich and diverse historical sites in the landscape which you can discover and research on
- Coflein - The online catalogue of archaeology, buildings, industrial and maritime heritage in Wales
Be aware that many historical monuments are on private land, so it is important to identify which, as where that is the case you would need obtain the owner’s permission to go onto that land and carry out activities. This may focus your thinking. Ideally find one that the school can freely visit.
Choose one that best suits your school/groups needs. Once you have found your monument and got any approvals needed, you can arrange a learner’s trip to the historical monument and fire up your imaginations. If your chosen site is a Cadw site please see Education Visits | Cadw (gov.wales)
