Open Doors - Ruin of St Mary's Church and churchyard
Perched a short distance on the hillside above Tintern Abbey, and just off a medieval pilgrimage trail, the Grade II listed ruin of St Mary's Church / Llanandras was originally built by the Cistercians for their lay tenants as a separate place of worship. The ruin is on a Celtic site previously dedicated to either St Andrew or St Andras. It has medieval parts, Victorian extensions and beautiful views down to Tintern village, the river Wye, Tintern Abbey and over to Offa's Dyke. The churchyard is a wildflower meadow containing rare monuments. Pedestrians only, no road or disabled access.
From obscure Celtic saints to Cistercians, wealthy Ironmasters to bankruptcy, St Mary’s has a varied and colourful history. Visitors will receive a short tour around the churchyard and ruin exterior whilst receiving an informal talk on the history, folklore and legends of Chapel Hill. Particular attention will be given to: the Lower Wye Valley Building Preservation Trust's plans to consolidate the ruin for all to enjoy; the flora and fauna within the wildflower meadow; and the architectural features and histories of the Grade II listed pyramid, winecooler, Roman altar tombs, war graves and Sengenydd Pit disaster.
