Highgate/Love Lane - This link of the town centre to the castle is a more moderate climb than the steep direct paths. The narrow street features on John Speed's map of 1610 and retains a medieval atmosphere with a rich variety of buildings.

Vale Street - The grand approach to the Town Square with several important buildings. Many occupy the old Burgage plots with narrow frontages and considerable depth. This is the most important Street of the gridded layout established in the middle ages.
