Welcome to Merthyr, a place of Christian witness unbroken since the days of saints and martyrs. If you visit the church itself, you'll arrive at an ancient site, walking in the footsteps of pious, Dark Age settlers and blackhooded, mediaeval monks. Faithful parishioners have been served by dedicated parish priests for the past six centuries.  Countless generations have come here to be baptised, married, and buried. The past is all around you in this quiet, outoftheway corner of Carmarthenshire. Listen carefully and you might hear echoes from long ago  voices of farmers, servants, gentry, paupers and a strongwilled woman who helped the Welsh nation learn to read and write. The present church of St Martin and St Enfail still serves the local community.

The church will be open from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday 20th September and Sunday 21st September, offering a friendly welcome and light refreshments. On the Sunday at 4.30pm Mari James from St David's Cathedral Library will be interviewed by journalist Ron Lewis concerning the remarkable 1620 Welsh Bible discovered in the church and its fascinating history and excellent condition. This will be followed by light refreshments. At 6pm there will be a service of bilingual Evensong with the Bishop of St David's as the preacher to celebrate the rebuilding of the church some 150 years ago and the 1620 Bible.

Please note that all are welcome to attend the interview at 4.30pm on the Sunday, the light
refreshments to follow and the service of evensong with the Bishop at 6pm. There will be a charge of
£5 for the interview and refreshments, to be shared between the church and St David's Cathedral
Library for the upkeep and repair of the 1620 Bible.
