Taibach Community Education Centre is based at the old Eastern School, which educated children in Port Talbot from 1831 to the midtwentieth century. The building is most famous for its connection to Richard Burton, who was a founder member of the youth club and gave some of his earliest public performances on the stage in the hall. Currently, the building is undergoing a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This will lead to the development of a new heritage trail in the building promoting its history, as well as the renovation of the hall and the craft room.

This is a very special event because it is the public opening of our new interpretation scheme at the community centre. As part of our grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are installing a heritage trail and timeline through the building, drawing on our volunteers’ archive research and oral history interviews. There will also be the opportunity for tours of the building, exhibits on its history, and free refreshments.

Taibach Community Education Centre, Margam Road, Taibach, Port Talbot, Neath Port Talbot, SA13 2BN

Taibach Community Education Centre is easily accessible on the main road through Taibach in Port Talbot. There are red railings outside the centre and a lane (signposted SNAC Special Needs Activity Centre) leads around the back of the building to ample parking. Port Talbot train station is approximately one mile from the centre, with regular buses from the Port Talbot transport hub adjacent to the station.  The X1 and 87 bus routes stop near the centre.
