Laugharne is not a village; it is a township thanks to the Royal Charter granted to Laugharne Corporation some seven centuries ago. The Corporation was the municipal authority with responsibility for all those matters that are nowadays dealt with local authorities.

Today transformed into a charity, the Corporation still meets every fortnight in the Town Hall which contains numerous artefacts, such as standardised units of measure, maps showing the shares of land still granted to burgesses today, and panels listing the Portreeves (forerunner of today's mayors) of the past 300 years or so.

Meet with today's Portreeve and Aldermen of the Corporation, to find out more about the Corporation's treasures and the work it does today as a charity for the benefit of local people, from subsidised rents and leases to financial support for worthy local causes.

The Town Hall, Market Street, Laugharne, Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, SA33 4SA. The Town Hall is the white building adjacent to the entrance to Laugharne Castle. It is easily recognised by the tall clock tower.

N.B. the Town Hall is up a flight of stone steps.

No booking required.
